Seiko Tuna Y187-7A30 This watch is all too familiar to Seiko enthusiasts. The first series of this model was released in 1975 after a seven-year hiatus dedicated to research and development to address issues raised by a saturation diver who had become disillusioned with the 6215 and 6159 300m variants, Seiko’s first attempts at a true professional diver. The result was the 6159-7010, or what we now refer to as the “Grandfather Tuna.” The flat cylindrical structure and shrouded case resembled the shape (and almost the size) of certain canned fish. The nickname stuck, as did the design, and has given rise to many Tuna models since. While the Tuna models are generally newer, the Y187 and Y182 variants from the late 90s are an unusual branch at the ends of the Tuna family. Although definitive evidence is lacking, it appears that these were created and released exclusively for the Italian market. This raises a few questions at first glance, but there is some speculation that these were dreamed up by the famous Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. It can certainly be linked to the design of several Seiko legends. In this case, swapping the JDM reputation for an IDM design could definitely be worth it. It seems that the Italian Tuna models were only produced in 1998 and early 99, and for a specific and rather small market. Now, 20 years later, it may take some patience to get your hands on a great example. This example from April 98 is gorgeous. The case is a rather large 44mm, and while it doesn’t have an actual shroud, the case is made to resemble the classic Tuna shroud. The middle case is round and flat, with short contoured lugs and a sandblasted finish. The fixed bezel adds a lot of height. It has a linear brushed finish with polished chamfers at the hour positions, and houses a flat, glossy black tachymeter inset. The original domed hardlex crystal is a full 4.5mm thick, and when paired with a vertically placed black and white section, this watch has a surprising amount of depth. The bright orange dial is set with plenty of luminous applied and polished ring markers. The hour and minute hands are unique segmented arrows with luminous windows in each window. The only other spot of color is the water resistance designation in black. In addition to the time and date, it features a 60 sec. / 30 min. chronograph, a fixed 24-hour record at nine, and small seconds at six. All functions work flawlessly. A stunning continuation of the "Tuna" legacy, this is a candidate to be a favorite. The product you are reviewing was manufactured in 1998. Much of this description is taken from Hub City Vintage.
