Seiko SUS Hi-Beat Ref. 4S15-7020 / SCFF001 - September 1996

Seiko’s 1996 catalog uses an unusual analogy to describe the case of this SUS model: denim fabric that has undergone its first wash. The steel’s matte, finely lined surface is no coincidence; it is a texture applied to the case during manufacturing. When juxtaposed with the sharp white markers on the black dial, the watch’s character emerges: tactile to the touch, yet exceptionally clear to read at a glance.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this item ships from within the European Union, you will not be liable for customs duties within the EU.**

SUS is the name of the collection where Seiko combined the concepts of "Simple" and "Strong." The black-dialed SCFF001 conveys this philosophy through layout rather than ornamentation. All twelve Arabic numerals are present; the date window is tucked between the 4 and 5 markers, ensuring the ring of numerals remains unbroken. The broad hour and minute hands are easily distinguishable from one another, while the slender seconds hand sweeps across the dense scale encircling the dial. The red "S" at the center serves as the only bold color accent amidst the black-and-white scheme.
The serial number 691389 on the case back dates this specific piece to September 1996. With a diameter of approximately 35 mm, the case—featuring a wide bezel, prominent lugs, and a large, grooved crown—possesses a substantial presence that belies its compact size. The wide, luminous hands further reinforce the dial’s design, which prioritizes legibility above all else.
In contrast to the watch's understated front, the case back features an exhibition window. Visible through the transparent case back, the 25-jewel Calibre 4S15A is self-winding but also supports manual winding and features a hacking function (seconds-stop). Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement lives up to the "HI-BEAT" inscription on the dial.
However, it is not just the technical specifications that make the 4S15A truly interesting. The architecture of the 4S family traces back to Seiko’s 52 series and the 52 King Seiko movements of the 1970s. The fact that Seiko later chose the 4S15 for one of its historic King Seiko re-issues makes this connection even more significant. Beneath the SUS model's simple, functional case lies a structure rooted in Seiko’s serious mechanical heritage.
This particular example is not NOS (New Old Stock), but it is in excellent condition. Slight hairline scratches consistent with its age are visible upon close inspection but go unnoticed at a casual glance; these are distinct from the factory-applied textured finish described in the original catalog. The black dial, white printing, and red "S" logo retain a clean appearance. The watch comes with the brown leather strap shown in the photos and a black zippered carrying case.

Final Thoughts
The strength of this SUS model lies in what isn't immediately apparent at first glance. Seiko deliberately gave the case a textured finish right from the factory, kept the dial simple for instant readability, and equipped it with the 4S15A movement—a caliber beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with lineage tracing back to the 52 series. Dating from September 1996, this SCFF001 appears simple and robust on the outside, yet reveals itself to be a far more serious Seiko timepiece upon closer inspection.
