Seiko Marvel was not made directly by Seiko, but by Epson, which was a subsidiary of Seiko at the time. Released in 1956, this Marvel series was the first original mechanical watch produced by Epson. The Seiko Marvel model was an important watch for several reasons. This model was primarily aimed at competing with Swiss watches. During this period, Swiss watches were famous for their quality and workmanship. The Marvel was designed to be a highly accurate and reliable watch that could rival Swiss watches, and it was a great success. The watch became a bestseller in Japan and gained an outstanding reputation for quality. It even beat other Swiss and non-Japanese watches in competitions such as the American Watchmakers Institute (AWCI) and the American Horological Society, paving the way for future Seiko innovations. Marvel's success laid the foundation for Epson's watchmaking division and also influenced the design of later Seiko watches, including the Grand Seiko. Seiko Marvel had a simple but elegant design with a large dial and sharp hands and indices that made it easy to read. It was available in a variety of models, including the high-end Lord Marvel and the automatic Gyro Marvel. Today, Seiko Marvel is considered a valuable collector's item.
