Seiko Dolce KINCHO 100th Anniversary Ref. 7731-7020 - December 1984
At first glance, it is not immediately apparent that this watch was created to commemorate a company’s centenary. The white dial features only the name "SEIKO," three slender gold-tone hands, and black Japanese characters in place of conventional numerals. Upon turning the watch over, however, the rooster emblem, a stylized "100," and a spiral motif on the case back reveal the story hidden on the front.

The characters on the dial are *Jūnishi* (十二支)-the Twelve Earthly Branches. While today they are most commonly associated with the twelve animals of the Chinese and Japanese zodiacs, their historical usage was far broader; they were also employed to denote time, the calendar, and cardinal directions.
On this Dolce model, the twelve characters are not arranged sequentially around the dial. Instead, Seiko has positioned them in six opposing pairs: 子–午, 丑–未, 寅–申, 卯–酉, 辰–戌, and 巳–亥. These pairings are inherent to the structure of the traditional system—for instance, 子 and 午 represent the north–south axis, while 卯 and 酉 represent the east–west axis. Fine concentric circles and small omplex arrangement remarkably serene. Only the small "SEIKO" signature appears in the middle. There is no date window, applied index, or any other decorative element. The legibility of the dial is maintained as the slender, gold-toned hands sweep over the black characters.
There is another particularly delightful detail here: the character 酉 (yū) on the dial traditionally represents the rooster, while the case back features KINCHO’s historic rooster-head emblem. Although there is no documentation confirming that Seiko intentionally created this connection, it establishes a striking visual correspondence between the front and back of the watch.
The serial number 4D0809 on the case back dates this specific piece to December 1984. Dainihon Jochugiku the parent company of the KINCHO brand traces its origins back to 1885, and it celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1985. Consequently, this watch was produced just before that centenary celebration.
A special engraving on the case back clearly reflects this connection: alongside KINCHO’s rooster emblem, there is a large "100," beneath which appears a spiral shape a motif synonymous with one of the most iconic products in the company’s history. The rooster-head trademark was registered by the company in 1910, while the spiral has become one of the most recognizable symbols of KINCHO’s identity, forged over more than a century through its mosquito-repellent coils.
The case back bears the reference number 7731-7020, while the inscription "JAPAN 7731-7030 R" appears along the bottom edge of the dial. This number, which differs from the case reference, serves as the factory code for the dial.
At its core, the watch is powered by the Seiko Calibre 7731A. The analog quartz movement—featuring three hands, three jewels, and an operating frequency of 32,768 Hz belongs to the 7731 family, which Seiko utilized in its slim dress watches of that era.
The gold-tone case measures approximately 31.5 mm in width with a lug-to-lug distance of 37.5 mm. Thanks to its long, straight lugs and slender bezel, the watch offers a greater sense of surface area than the numerical dimensions might suggest. The small crown, accented with a black tip, serves as one of the few points of contrast in a design otherwise defined by its gold and white tones.
While this piece is not offered as "new old stock" (NOS), its condition is remarkably strong for its age. The white dial is pristine, the black markings remain sharp, and both the gold-tone hands and the case surfaces are well-preserved. On the case back, the KINCHO rooster, the 100th-anniversary graphic, and other engravings remain clearly legible.
The watch comes with an additional black strap (as shown in the photographs) and a Seiko presentation box featuring a green exterior and a red interior. As there is no definitive confirmation that this specific box was produced exclusively for this KINCHO 100th-anniversary model, it is considered simply as a Seiko box accompanying the set.
Final Thoughts
The defining characteristic of this 7731-7020 is that it does not proclaim its centenary on the dial; instead, it distributes the narrative across both sides of the watch. The front features the "Twelve Earthly Branches" a system used for centuries to denote time and direction while the case back displays KINCHO’s iconic rooster, a spiral motif, and the 100th-anniversary emblem. Dating from December 1984, this slim Seiko Dolce presents itself, at first glance, as an elegant and unconventional dress watch. When turned over, it reveals itself to be a commemorative piece marking the centenary of a Japanese company with a history dating back to 1885.
