Today, it is commonplace for an alarm to produce an electronic sound. In 1972, however, the method of wearing an alarm on one's wrist was far more mechanical: it involved a separate mainspring, a gear train, and a small striking mechanism inside the case that physically generated sound. The Seiko Bell-Matic 4006-7012 is one of those models that conceals this complex system beneath the appearance of an ordinary automatic watch.

The serial number 241094 on the case back dates the watch to April 1972. The dial clearly displays "27 JEWELS," and the photographed movement confirms the 4006A caliber and its 27-jewel construction.
With a case diameter of approximately 38 mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of around 42.5 mm, the watch is surprisingly compact considering the complexity of the movement inside. At first glance, with its white-silver vertical brushed dial, long baton indices, and day-date window at the 3 o'clock position, it appears to be a fairly standard 1970s Seiko.
Its unique character only becomes apparent when one notices the rotating alarm ring around the dial and the second pusher on the right side of the case.
The internal 27-jewel 4006A is an automatic movement operating at a frequency of 19,800 vibrations per hour. In addition to standard timekeeping, center seconds, and a calendar system, it features a mechanical alarm. The alarm time is set using the rotating ring on the dial; when the time arrives, sound is produced not by an electronic buzzer, but by the physical action of the mechanical system. The significance of the Bell-Matic lies in more than just its alarm feature. Seiko integrated this function into an everyday automatic watch without resorting to an additional sub-dial, an oversized case, or complex indicators. Consequently, the watch looks far more understated than its technical capabilities suggest.
This particular example is in good condition, though it is not New Old Stock (NOS). It is fitted with a Seiko-signed steel bracelet; a black leather strap and a presentation box are also included.

At that moment, the watch does more than simply display the time; it mechanically recalls the time you set and makes that memory genuinely audible.
