Seiko 5 Automatic 5126-8110 & Seiko Salvia 1104-0100 – Two Different Hearts, One Design
At first glance, it is not just their colors that link these two watches. From the case geometry and the shape of the indices to the navy blue dials and orange accents, one can see the same design concept interpreted at two different scales.
Yet, beneath this strong external resemblance lie two completely different mechanical characters.
The larger model, the Seiko 5 Ref. 5126-8110, houses the 23-jewel Calibre 5126A automatic movement. The framed day-date window at the 3 o'clock position, the Seiko 5 emblem, and the "23 JEWELS" inscription on the dial highlight the model's more functional nature.
The smaller Seiko Salvia Ref. 1104-0100 maintains the same visual language but with a much simpler mechanical architecture. It contains the 21-jewel Calibre 1104A manual-winding movement. With no calendar complication, the dial features only the three hands, the SEIKO Salvia signature, and the "23 JEWELS" inscription.
This is precisely where the detail that makes these two watches so interesting side-by-side comes to light.
One is not merely a scaled-down version of the other.
On one side, there is an automatic Seiko 5 driven by a rotor, featuring a day-date complication; on the other, a smaller, simpler Salvia that requires daily winding by its owner. Despite this, the distinct movements visible when the watches are turned over seem to vanish almost entirely when viewed from the front. Deep navy blue dials, sharply defined steel cases, distinctive orange accents set amidst white geometric indices, and hands sharing that same color palette—these elements create a striking visual harmony between the two watches. The Daini Seikosha lightning bolt emblem found on both casebacks serves as a small yet—for collectors—significant detail, signaling not only a shared design language but also their common heritage within the Seiko manufacturing world.
The "WATER PROOF" inscription on the casebacks is another detail that preserves the character of the era. Used before Seiko transitioned to the "Water Resistant" terminology in later years, this marking directly reflects the identity both watches held in the late 1960s.
Today, the watches are paired with leather straps that match the texture and navy tone of the dials, and they are presented in two separate Seiko presentation boxes from the period. Since we cannot document that these specific boxes were originally paired with these watches at the factory, we do not label this an "original pair set." In truth, there is no need to.
For when the two watches are placed side by side, the connection is established not by the boxes, but by the watches themselves.
Final Thoughts
One is automatic.
The other is hand-wound.
One displays the day and date.
The other conveys time in its simplest form.
Mechanically, they differ; yet the moment you look at their faces, it is undeniable that they speak the same language.
That is precisely what makes this set special:

Produced just two months apart 58 years ago, these two Seiko watches are once again side by side.
