Ricoh Dynamic Wide Automatic 21 Jewels

The Japanese watch industry of the 1970s was not merely producing reliable movements; it was reinterpreting the established design codes of European watchmaking through its own engineering philosophy. The Ricoh Dynamic Wide stands out as one of the most distinctive examples of this confident era: while its full-text day window, magnified date display, and fluted bezel evoke the style of classic prestige watches, it houses one of Ricoh’s proprietary automatic movements beneath its caseback.

**IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this product is shipped from within the European Union, you will not be liable for customs duties within the EU.**

The history of the Dynamic Wide family dates back to the second half of the 1960s. One of the series' most defining features is the wide window at the 12 o'clock position that displays the full day of the week. The stylized "W" emblem located just below it is another characteristic mark found on models from this era. This layout, combined with the magnified date window at 3 o'clock, gives the dial both a strong identity and excellent legibility.

The stainless steel case, measuring approximately 36 mm in diameter, creates a striking contrast with the black dial and the gold-tone fluted bezel. Gold-colored applied baton indices and hands, paired with a white minute track, complete the two-tone aesthetic typical of the period. The recessed quick-set button at the 2 o'clock position is a small yet significant detail that highlights one of the movement's signature functions.

Inside, the 21-jewel Ricoh automatic movement also documented in the accompanying photos aligns in terms of structure and function with the Calibre 61 family, which was utilized from around 1970 onwards. Operating at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour, the movement features bi-directional automatic winding. The date is advanced rapidly using the button at the 2 o'clock position, while the day display is adjusted via the hands. The "RICOH AUTO JAPAN - 21 JEWELS" signature on the rotor clearly reveals the movement's identity.

The case back features the Ricoh emblem along with the inscriptions "Anti-Magnetic," "All Stainless Steel," "Water-Resistant," and "Shock-Proof." These specifications reflect the standards of the era in which the watch was produced; they should not be interpreted as a modern guarantee of water resistance. The Ricoh-signed crown and buckle complete the watch's overall appearance.

While the movement and various Ricoh-signed components in this example are period-correct, there is insufficient documentation to confirm that all external components such as the dial, case, bezel, and bracelet remain in their original factory condition. Therefore, the watch is presented not as a completely untouched collector's piece, but as a preserved or restored example that brings the vintage Ricoh movement and the bold design character of the Dynamic Wide into the present day.

Final Word
An automatic watch that evokes the prestige timepieces of the 1970s at first glance, yet speaks with its own distinct Japanese identity upon closer inspection. With its unique mechanical engineering concealed behind a familiar design language and its unconventional day-date layout, the Ricoh Dynamic Wide represents one of the most distinctive faces of vintage Japanese watchmaking.
