Omega De Ville Quartz Ref. 191.0125 – The 1980s Quest for Slimness
Some vintage Omegas want to show off their movements. Others speak through their complications. This De Ville, however, makes its statement by saying almost nothing at all.

Part of Omega’s 1980 International Collection, the Ref. 191.0125 is the product of a unique era when the Swiss watch industry utilized quartz technology not merely to produce more accurate timepieces, but to reimagine traditional watch architecture. Here, Omega leveraged the technical freedom afforded by quartz to create an exceptionally slim, minimalist, and geometric dress watch.
Its case—featuring a near-square shape with softened corners, broad brushed surfaces, and short lugs—clearly embodies the design language of the 1980s. In stark contrast, the gold-tone dial is defined by an almost absolute simplicity. While the finely vertically textured surface shifts in character depending on the angle of the light, the dial features nothing but applied baton indices, two slender hands, the Omega logo, and the signature “De Ville Quartz” script.
No date. No numerals. No seconds hand.
And no traditional crown, either.
Looking at the right side of the watch, one sees a tiny adjustment button recessed into the case rather than a conventional crown. This unusual detail is directly linked to the Omega Calibre 1365 beating at the watch's heart.
According to Omega’s technical documentation from 1980, the Cal. 1365 is an ultra-thin quartz movement—measuring just 1.90 mm in thickness—that features 9 jewels and operates at a frequency of 32,768 Hz. Its technical specifications for the era offer an accuracy of better than ±5 seconds per month and a battery life of approximately two years. Time adjustment is performed electronically via a recessed button in the case rather than a mechanical crown.
Thus, a technical solution simultaneously becomes an integral part of the watch's design. The absence of a protruding crown allows the right profile of the case to flow uninterrupted, while the 1.90 mm movement forms the foundation of the De Ville's ultra-slim "dress watch" character.
In the example shown, this period-correct character extends to the details. The brown leather strap creates a classic pairing with the gold-tone case, while the period-correct buckle featuring the Omega emblem completes the look. An original secondary leather strap and a cherry-toned Omega presentation box are also included. Although we cannot document that this specific box was paired with this watch at the factory—and therefore do not classify it as part of the watch's original set—it perfectly embodies the character of Omega presentation boxes from that era.
Final Thoughts
The story of the quartz revolution is often told through the lens of what mechanical watchmaking lost. The Omega De Ville 191.0125, however, stands as a far more interesting example of what quartz technology could bring to watch design: slimness, precision, and a form stripped of all superfluity. It was designed in 1980 to look modern.
