ALBA Flap Duck Outdoor Sports Ref. Y101-6040
Transforming a watch bracelet into a ruler, its dial into a navigation chart, and its case into a piece of compact outdoor gear...
The ALBA Flap Duck Y101-6040 is an extraordinary example of just how unconstrained Japanese design philosophy could be in the early 1990s.

The serial number 344378 on the case back dates this specific unit's production to April 1993. The "FLAP DUCK – OUTDOOR SPORTS" emblem, along with the "Stainless Steel" and "Water Resist" markings on the same case back, clearly demonstrates that the model's outdoor identity extends beyond mere dial graphics.
The stainless steel case—measuring approximately 33 mm in width, 40 mm in length, and around 7.2 mm in thickness—deliberately breaks away from classic round watch geometry. The asymmetrical structure extending toward the right side of the body and the crown positioned at the 4 o'clock mark give the watch a far more technical and distinctive character, despite its compact dimensions. Although the design is reminiscent of the asymmetrical industrial watches associated with Seiko during that era, there is no confirmed record of the Y101-6040 being a Giugiaro design; therefore, we do not directly attribute the model to him.
The 0–360 degree scale surrounding the black dial, the directional arrows pointing to the four cardinal points, the bold white hands, and the luminous markers effectively transform the watch into an analog navigation instrument. The red leaf emblem serves as the sole color accent amidst the stark black-and-white graphic layout. The watch does not feature an electronic or magnetic compass; The concept of wayfinding is expressed here through a graphic design language rather than a purely mechanical one.
Inside, the watch is powered by the Seiko/ALBA Calibre Y101 analog quartz movement. The "WATER 100m RESIST" marking on the dial reflects the factory classification from the time of production; today, water resistance can only be verified through a separate pressure test.
One of the model's most distinctive features is its original metal bracelet (model code AA94A). Thanks to a measurement scale engraved on the bracelet links, it can function as a ruler approximately 20 centimeters long when fully extended. Thus, the bracelet does more than just hold the watch; it becomes a directly functional component of the model's outdoor-oriented concept. The black zippered case shown in the photos is also included with the watch.
Final Thoughts
The Flap Duck Y101-6040 is not merely a quartz watch that tells time; it is a compact Japanese outdoor tool that combines a sense of direction, a measurement function, and an asymmetrical case design into a single object. Surviving from April 1993 to the present day, this example still fully embodies the character that demonstrates just how far ALBA was willing to step outside conventional watch design.
